6 Ways To Make Exercise More Enjoyable

One of the main things that puts people off exercising is the simple fact that they don’t find it enjoyable. Exercise can be intimidating, tiresome and sometimes even painful, so it is easy to see why some people shy away from it.

However, with so many different ways to exercise, there really is something out there for everyone, you may just not have found the sport or technique that works for you.

So we’re going to look at different ideas for you to try, to make exercise something that’s less of a chore and more of a habit.

Work out with loved ones

If you work out with your friends or family, you may find it to be a much more pleasant experience than doing it on your own. You can support, encourage and improve together. It also makes it a good way to be sociable at the same time.

Group sports are also a great idea, such as tennis, soccer, or even something like volleyball; check out this portable volleyball net you can set up in your garden or at the park. When you exercise like this, you’ll forget that you’re even doing a workout. As it’s more about the experience you’re having with your teammates, you’re sure to have plenty of laughs along the way. See if you can set up a group sports session today.

Go at your own pace and work your way up

A lot of the time, people expect instant results when they start exercising. But unfortunately, that’s not the way it goes. You need to put the time and effort in over a series of months to really reap the rewards. That’s why you need to start small and build your way up.

For example, with weights, see what you can lift with moderate ease, and then, week by week, slowly push yourself by increasing the reps and the weights to ensure that you’re pushing yourself without putting yourself at any risk.

You’ll be impressed with the progress you make, but make sure you only set yourself realistic expectations – that way you can be pleased with your progress instead of putting yourself down.

Overall our mindset plays a big part in how much we enjoy exercise, and gradually improving is a great feeling.

Reward yourself

Setting yourself goals and rewards is a fantastic way for you to motivate yourself. Whether you set the intention to swim six times a month, or to finally run 5k, create yourself a chart where you tick off any small wins, as well as big.

You can have the rewards match, for example for a small milestone, you could treat yourself to a meal at your favorite restaurant, or for a bigger win, you could consider a weekend minibreak.

Whatever will give you that little boost. Treat yourself for all of your hard work and it’ll be all the more worthwhile.

Exercise out in nature

There’s nothing better than getting out and about exercising – being out in nature is good for the soul after all. So it doesn’t matter if you’re doing a hike, cycling with a beautiful view, or simply doing jumping jacks in the backyard, doing it outdoors will make it that much more enjoyable.

If bad weather is putting you off, then make sure you’re kitted out in the right gear, from thermals to waterproof layers.

Try something new

Lots of people think they don’t like exercise simply because they haven’t found the right type. Fortunately, there are hundreds of different workout routines and styles, so spend a bit of time experimenting. If you know you don’t enjoy traditional sports, like football and tennis, try something a little different, like fencing or water polo.

Alternatively, if the gym really isn’t your cup of tea, you could go for something like outdoor yoga or gymnastics to get in shape. There really is no age limit when it comes to trying new things, so don’t be put off by a lack of skill or athleticism.

Have a timetable

The key to building a habit is consistency and, over time, this consistency can help you to enjoy your workouts more.

In the beginning, it will be tough to force yourself to exercise when you really don’t feel like it, but once you’ve come to associate Wednesday mornings with yoga or a HIIT session, you’ll find yourself looking forward to it. Try to keep your routine varied, so you don’t get bored; pair jogging with indoor workouts or a trip to a local dance studio.

We’re all unique and enjoy different things. But with these methods, you’re sure to find a way to enjoy exercise that little bit more. Give them a go.
