If you’re new to golf, you may be looking for a little advice on how to get started and what you need to take with you. If you’re a seasoned golfer, you may still find a few items on here you had not considered before; some things that maybe will make your next round a little easier.
Although having the best equipment can certainly improve your confidence at the golf course, without the right technique you may struggle to make the most of your game. To become a better golfer seek regular tuition, practice and review techniques will help you lower your handicap.
In the meantime, here are all the things you need to have in your golf bag whenever you hit the green.
This may seem like an obvious one, but many people find themselves running out of balls because they failed to pack enough in their golf bag.
Depending on your skill level, three or four sleeves should be enough – you can always collect some strays while you play, but it’s better to be prepared by packing enough in your ball before you get started.
Another seemingly obvious suggestion but sometimes those chilly mornings and evenings can take us completely by surprise. Pack an extra layer in your bag, so you will never find yourself in need and if you make it a waterproof jacket then not even rain is going to slow you down.
Regardless of where you live or where you are golfing, an umbrella is a must. You will be in need of it should you be caught in heavy rain, but you should also make use of it to protect you from the sun.
Following on from our previous item, always have sunscreen in your bag no matter the weather. You’re being subjected to UV rays even when it’s cloudy, so protect your skin when spending hours outdoors playing golf.
Stocking up on some sun protection will also leave your skin feeling refreshed and hydrated, even after an afternoon in the sunshine.
Band-aids are not just to cover up any cuts or protect your heels when your shoes are rubbing – they can also provide abrasion protection. Band-aids are one of those things that you never really realize how valuable they are until you find yourself in need of one.
This should go without saying – protect yourself from mosquitoes with a healthy helping of bug spray. Whether it’s the irritating buzz of flying insects putting you off your game or itchy bites driving you to distraction, stocking up on bug spray will help you keep your mind on your swing.
Follow in the footsteps of Tiger Woods and wrap up your fingers using tape if you find band-aids too bulky.
This will come in handy by providing relief if you accidentally slam your ankle with your putter, but it can also be a great little helper on those hot days by cooling the back of your neck.
If you do not have a caddy then packing your own towels is especially important. You will need one to clean your clubs and another to wipe your face and hands-on.
When the sun is beating down in the middle of summer or you’re playing on those colder winter mornings, having something refreshing to drink while you’re on the course is a golf bag essential.
Even on the coldest of days players can work up a sweat while walking miles across the course, which is why taking a re-usable water bottle along for your game is highly recommended.
Keeping yourself hydrated is important at the best of times, but even more so when you’re playing a sport. For those colder moments, a hot beverage from a flask will help you keep warm and you’ll certainly be glad you brought it.
Do not run out of tees in the middle of a round, kept a decent arsenal of them in your golf bag.
Even the most seasoned golfer will tell you that there’s nothing worse than experiencing hunger pangs when you’re at the turn.
Feeling hungry can mean your blood sugar takes a hit, which can make you feel woozy, leave you struggling to concentrate and even make you hangry. Therefore, packing some sustenance in your golf bag is a must. Keep it small with some nuts and seeds for a protein boost, or pack a sandwich to keep you feeling fuller for longer.
Enjoy your game!
